The diverse 300-odd fleet will comprise traditional-style, fixed-seat craft from curraghs to cutters, galleys to gigs, lifeboats to longboats, shallops to skiffs, whalers to wherries and many, many more. The Race is run on a ‘slowest away first, fastest last’ pursuit handicap basis, so all will be attempting to maintain their various handicap advantages over Cam and Old Balliol, the fastest boats in the Race and faithful replicas of the fixed-seat gigs which were rowed in the inaugural Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race in 1829.
